What Readers Say

Rating System: X/5 Goldenback Shrimp

  • "Understanding why things work is essential to successful shrimp keeping and if you only have one book in your collection, this is it.

This superb guide explains the science behind keeping freshwater dwarf shrimp, specifically Neocaridina and Caridina species. The aspiring invertebrate keeper can make informed decisions rather than relying on guesswork at any level of experience. It connects good aquarium discipline, water changes, feeding and biology through to chemistry at an understandable level. You will gain knowledge on ecosystem dynamics and improve shrimp health, breeding success, and tank stability."

Experience Level: 20+ years in the aquarium hobby

  • "Whether you are entirely new to the hobby altogether, or (like myself) are moving specifically into shrimp after years in the general aquarium hobby, The Science of Shrimp Keeping is a must-have. Despite teeming with scientific references and terminology, the book is written in a very approachable and newcomer friendly manner. Clever arguments are made where information is simply still an unknown by extrapolating from related studies, leading to guidance and advice that is grounded and logical. Being an ebook, updates are available as husbandry information grows and changes - making the book a ‘shrimply’ must have!"

Experience Level: 10-year aquarist, new shrimp keeper

  • "Thanks for making this book, it's definitely about to be my bible. I started reading it and I'm hooked. It's not only super informative, but very entertaining as well. “There's info you can't find elsewhere” seemed like a marketing claim but in the first few chapters you've already eliminated some doubt about stuff I already spent a good deal of time researching.

As a side note, a lot of the info in there is actually helpful for keeping aquariums overall, especially the bits on ecosystems and water parameters."

Experience Level: 2+ year aquarist, new shrimp keeper

  • "I was new to shrimps and was interested in cherry shrimp/neos only. This book gave a good detailed description of all the need-to-knows and then some more! I didn’t know there was so much to be aware of, particularly the water parameters. Needless to say I took notes regarding this and have had success with a growing population. The thing I like is that I can quickly look back at the extras that didn’t make sense until I actually encountered them. For example, dealing with molting problems and sick shrimp."

Will this be released as a physical book?

We do eventually plan to release a physical book. That being said, a PDF is the best format for this information because it is so easy to navigate and find any information you need.

Why did you write this book?

This eBook was created to accomplish the same goals as other Shrimply Explained resources - to make shrimp keeping easier, more fun, and to save shrimp lives! When we first entered the hobby five years ago, there was plenty of content on shrimp keeping but it was filled with contradictions and most of it was supported by evidence like "trust me, bro". There are also a lot of useful tips, but there's often no organization or they're hidden within two-hour long videos.

Some people love doing the research - combing through forums, running through a bunch videos at 2x speed while taking notes, analyzing research papers, etc., and that's great. Go for it!

If you don't want to do that, and instead want tons of science-backed information at your fingertips without hundreds of hours of research, then this eBook is for you :)

Did you use AI to write this?

It depends on what you mean by "AI". Did we use Word's autocorrect feature to help with typos? Yep!

Did we just plug a bunch of prompts into ChatGPT and then copy the answer? Nope, the writing and images are all human, which is why it took... nearly 3 years to write this... Jeez, maybe we should have used AI.

Are you shrimp?

Yes :)
